The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene kicks off the Chanukah season in grand fashion for all New Yorkers with the highly acclaimed and much anticipated “Songs of Chanukah” celebration concerts on Sunday, December 14 at 12:30pm at The Winter Garden at Brookfield Place and Wednesday, December 17 at 7pm at Queens College.

The community-wide events, which are open to the public free of charge, will feature traditional holiday melodies, hot klezmer tunes, and special surprises from such fantastic performers as renowned vocalist Magda Fishman, distinguished actress and vocalist Rachel Yucht, virtuoso bouzouki player Avram Pengas, acclaimed clarinetist Dmitri Zisl Slepovitch, noted musician Brian Glassman and prominent drummer Matt Temkin, with music direction by internationally-recognized authority on Yiddish music and NYTF Artistic Director, pianist and conductor Zalmen Mlotek. They will perform in Yiddish, English, Hebrew and Ladino with English supertitles.

The free concerts are sponsored by Arts Brookfield and Queens College Center for Jewish Studies, among many others as a Chanukah gift to the community, and presented in conjunction with the office of Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, New York Board of Rabbis, and Manhattan Jewish Historical Initiative.

“Just as the lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree traditionally signifies the start of the holiday season in the eyes of New Yorkers, our Festival of Lights concerts represent the launch of the eights day of Chanukah celebration for the entire Jewish community in and around the city,” said Bryna Wasserman, NYTF executive director. “Of course, we could not attain such lofty status without our many supporters, sponsors such as Arts Brookfield, and the many thousands of New Yorkers of all ages who come and revel at these concerts.”
