Valentine’s Day came a little early to 54 Below when Joshua Henry (on February 10th) took the stage to perform his newest cabaret show, This Is The Love. Henry, who has been featured in Porgy and Bess, The Scottsboro Boys and In the Heights, is scheduled to appear opposite Sutton Foster in the upcoming Broadway musical, Violet. But it is clear that he enjoys singing before a small crowd in an intimate environment.

Backed by a four-piece band under the musical direction of Jason Michael Web, Henry performed a combination of Broadway love songs, Motown hits and his own songs. He also performed several duets with Mariand Torres, including Rodgers and Hammerstein’a “We Kiss in a Shadow.”

Henry, who sings and plays the piano and guitar (his guitar instrumental solo was a highlight of the evening), is also an accomplished arranger, which was evident in many of the songs he sang. The Music Man hit “Till There Was You” was particularly moving and original.

In addition to a powerful and lyric voice, Henry also has wonderful enthusiasm and a playful sense of humor. He seemed to have many friends in the audience and to be eager to make friends with the others.

In fact, those who see Joshua Henry’s cabaret show may be especially fortunate. If Violet is a hit, he may be a very busy man in the near future.
