As always, there are surprises, snubs and shows that didn’t make it because of Tony cutoff date (Feb.20) . . . like Girl From the North Country and West Side Story. Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart spun his Tony Award and had some fine memories to talk about before he announced the 74th Annual Tony Award nominees in 25 categories. Here they are on the Tony YouTube channel (https://www.TonyAwards.com/Announcement2020).

The nominees were selected by an independent committee of 41 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. The 2020 Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.  (The list of nominations follows.)

The 74th annual ceremony honors a Broadway season cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, as shows went dark March 12 and will remain shuttered until at least June 2021 (and likely later). As the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing determined a February 19 eligibility cut-off, 18 total productions are in the running for this year’s awards—go through those shows here.

Some productions had begun previews or opened between that date and March 12, though nominators or voters may not have seen them in time to make determinations.

There is still no official word yet on when this year’s ceremony, to be held virtually, will take place. So now it’s time for you, the theater audience to make some of your own decisions even if they didn’t make it to this list!
