Bob Mackie presents to Marilyn Maye

The American Songbook Association (ASA)  presented its first Annual Gala, The Joint Is Jumpin’!, a joyous celebration of contributions to the American Songbook by Black songwriters and notable singers on September 17 and its first annual Lifetime Achievement Award to singer Marilyn Maye. Ms. Maye’s award was presented by her longtime friend, fashion designer, Bob Mackie. The event took place at the Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center.

Jumpin’ to the occasion was a roster of top Broadway and Cabaret singers, hosted by Todd Murray, and including: Danny Bacher, Aaron Lee Battle, Natalie Douglas, Cady Huffman, N’Kenge, Joel A. Martin, Ken Page, Vivian Reed, Kissy Simmons, Stacy Sulivan and Jon Weber, with Tedd Firth on piano for Marvelous Marilyn Maye who wowed the audience with what amounted to almost a half show of songs as only she can with her whimsical, wondrous storytelling.

Music Director for the evening was Eugene Gwozdz on piano and Mark McClean on drums, with soprano saxophone contributions by Danny Bacher.
