Last night, the team that put together a musical tribute to RENT’s Jonathan Larson was at Barnes & Noble Upper West Side to unveil their new CD, The Jonathan Larson Project. Producer Jennifer Ashley Tepper has been a huge fan of RENT and Jonathan Larson since childhood. She had an amazing opportunity to research all of Jonathan’s writings, unfinished musicals, and recordings. After doing extensive research, she was given permission, by Jonathan’s sister, to put together a show and CD of Jonathan’s unpublished work.

Charlie Rosen worked on the musical orchestrations and tried to stay true to Jonathan Larson’s vision. The show opened at Feinstein’s/54 Below in October 2018 for sixteen performances. Each night featured a special guest, including numerous actors and actresses from the Original Broadway Cast.

The CD signing opened with Jennifer talking about the show, followed by performances by Nick Blaemire, Lauren Marcus, and George Salazar, who each sang one song from the album. Charlie Rosen got up on stage and discussed his process for getting Jonathan’s music to what you will hear now on the current album. Joe Iconis (Be More Chill), who wrote about Jonathan in the CD booklet, was also on hand.

Photographing the show at Feinstein’s/54 Below for Theater Pizzazz, I was able to capture the live performances of all five stars of the album, as well as Daphne Rubin-Vega, the original Mimi on Broadway. Jennifer Ashley Tepper saw my photos on Theater Pizzazz, and asked if she could use them in the CD. I am honored to have eleven of my photos in the 40 page booklet that accompanies the CD.

The Jonathan Larson Project CD is out now. In addition to listening to previously un-heard works from Jonathan Larson, you will also get a great education from the written pieces that accompany the CD. Available at Ghostlight Records.
