by Sandi Durell . . .

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. Steven Lutvak, someone I’ve known for over 30 years, died on October 9th unexpectedly.  He was 64 years old. Steven was a warm, kind, loving person and a great talent.

A native New Yorker, born in the Bronx, his talents covered the gamut from singer, songwriter, composer, coach, director, to the Kleban and Fred Ebb Award winner going on to win multi awards (Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Tony) for Broadway’s “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” in 2014. He composed the music and co-wrote the lyrics with Robert L. Freedman.

He frequently entertained audiences in the cabaret world with his special brand of songs like “Museums” and “The Dinner Party (Bagelmakers to the Czar)”. Steven composed the title track for the film Mad Hot Ballroom and the score for Eartha Kitt and Kevin McCarthy in Anything But Love.

He more recently worked as an adjunct professor at his alma mater, the New York University Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program.

Steven was married to choreographer Michael McGowan and they were the proud parents of daughter Eliot-Rose Lutvak-McGowan. A memorial will be forthcoming. Rest in Peace dear Steven.
