STOMP, the award-winning international sensation and iconic New York theatrical landmark opens Tuesday, July 20 at it’s home at Orpheum Theatre, 126 Second Avenue at 8th Street in the East Village. The next morning, Wednesday, July 21, the cast will be performing live on “Good Morning America” in Times Square; it is scheduled for the 8:30AM half hour. STOMP is among the first off-Broadway productions to resume performances since the pandemic. It runs 90 minutes.
STOMP is deeply committed to the health and safety of its audiences and performers and will require that all cast, crew, staff and audiences entering the Orpheum Theatre show proof of vaccination prior to entry. West End’s THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, (music/lyrics Stephen Schwartz, book Phillip LaZebnik) at the Dominion Theatre in London, and based on the classic DreamWorks Animation film, will begin reverting to full capacity audiences from Friday 23 July 2021 onwards. Following the current temporary suspension of performances due to Government Track and Trace legislation, the production will play three socially distanced performances on Wednesday 21 July at 7.30pm and Thursday 22 July at 2.30pm and 7.30pm before gradually reverting to full capacity. Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment is partnering with Shaanxi Tourism Group’s Legend Performances to present Sound of the Silk Road. The Mandarin-language musical, helmed by Gabriel Barre, features a book by Marc Acito, music by Peter Kam, and lyrics by Liang Man. Sound of the Silk Road will have its world premiere July 23-25 at Xi’an China’s Shaanxi Grand Theater. In 2022 the musical will be presented in a new theatrical venue at Xi’an’s new Silk Road Paradise theme park, prior to an international tour.
Pass Over begins previews Aug. 4 on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre for a limited 9 week run, with its 3-person cast Jon Michael Hill, Namir Smallwood and Gabriel Ebert. The play is written by Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu, directed by Danya Taylor.
The production will require audience members to provide proof of vaccination. The policy comes after careful study from lead producer Matt Ross and Dr. Blythe Adamson, an infectious disease epidemiologist hired by the production to oversee safety protocols. Together, Ross, Adamson and the production team have established COVID-19 prevention measures, ranging from pooled testing of company members to the employment of a COVID safety manager, they hope can provide a model for the industry in the months ahead.
Like “Springsteen on Broadway,” the production will accept proof of an FDA or WHO-authorized vaccine for entry. Theatergoers under the age of 16 or those who are unable to be vaccinated will be required to provide proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test.
Masks will be required while audience members move within the theater, but not while seated — a time which presents very low risk for transmission of the virus, Adamson said. This is, in part, due to increased ventilation at the August Wilson Theatre.
