54 Below, Broadway’s Supper Club, has announced a multi-year agreement with two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone. Twice yearly, LuPone will play two-week engagements at the venue.
The agreement, which runs through 2016, launches with the upcoming July 21 – August 3 engagement, “The Lady with The Torch.” In an evening, conceived and directed by Tony Award winner Scott Wittman, LuPone will perform an eclectic collection of torch songs by songwriters including Arthur Schwartz, Howard Dietz, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, Billy Barnes, Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, and Cole Porter. Don Heckman of The Los Angeles Times described the show as “a beautifully paced, marvelously delivered torch-song exploration of the pleasures and pains of love; LuPone’s remarkable, larger-than-life qualities and stunning musicality are distilled into the pure essence of her art.”
“I love 54 Below,” says LuPone. “It was an honor to launch this beautiful supper club when it first opened its doors two ago and it always feels like a homecoming when I return.”
“We are thrilled to have entered into this multi-year collaboration with Patti LuPone,” says Richard Frankel, an owner of 54 Below. “This agreement to grace our audiences with eight weeks of performances in the next two years is a testament to Patti’s power as an artist and the devoted audience that wants to see her. In the two years we have been open, Patti has played five engagements at 54 Below including her initial run that opened the room. Each engagement has been an event prompting sold-out houses, rave reviews and audiences delighted to be in the same, gorgeous and intimate room with one of the greatest artists of our time.”
