The 1/52 Project, founded by Tony Award winning designer Beowulf Boritt, is announcing at 12:00 PM today that applications are now being accepted for early-career designer recipients to benefit from $100,000 in grants. Last year the entire design teams of Hadestown, Hamilton, and Wicked all contributed. Already this year the entire design team of The Piano Lesson has contributed. Early donations for 2023 include Tony winners Julie Taymor, costume designer and director of The Lion King and Richard Hudson, set designer of The Lion King; Nevin Steinberg, the sound designer of Hamilton; Tyler Miccoleau, lighting designer of The Band’s Visit; Emmy Award winner David Korins, set designer of Hamilton; and Drama Desk winner Tony Meola, sound designer of Wicked. Among the non-designer contributors is Director/Author James Lapine.
The 1/52 Project launched in January 2022. It is primarily funded by designers with shows running on Broadway who are encouraged to donate one week every year of their weekly royalties to this fund, thus the 1/52 Project. The project hopes to encourage early career designers from historically excluded groups with the aim of diversifying and strengthening the Broadway design community. A world class committee of designers will adjudicate the 2023 Grants. www.oneeveryfiftytwo.org
